You need to establish goals and learn four basic 'skills' to be a successful marketer.

Set initial goals.
Whether you want to earn $100 per day or $1000 per day, write down your short term and long term goals. This allows you to obtain small successes while staying focused on your long term goal. The most successful people write out their goals and persevere until they achieve them.

1. Research and Select a Niche Product to Promote.
Your niche should be a market with a hungry audience. Do your research prior to selecting your niche. Most people get in over their head, without first understanding how they're going to make money in their niche.

2. Analyze your niche market
Is the niche you love, profitable?
What are other advertisers selling?
Lots of advertisers means a profitable market.

High Commission vs. high conversion
Consider how much you're going to earn. If you're using ppc (pay-per-click. e.g. Google adwords, (for more info search ppc), the commission and conversion rate is the basis for your advertising budget.

Find suitable affiliates within the industry you want to promote among the dozens of affiliate networks, and consider how much you are going to earn. If you are using ppc, the commission and conversion rate will determine your budget costs.

If you're promoting products through PPC, the program needs to pay enough to be profitable. If your selling a digital product, you should sell programs that pay at least 50% commission.

3. Implement your marketing plan
Once you find a product you love, it's time to promote it. If you have a website, set up a landing page to presell it. There are many ways to promote it: PPC is the easiest way to get traffic, but make sure you know what you're doing because you can spend a lot of money doing it wrong.

Writing articles
For zero cost marketing, you can write articles, about 500-700 words, and submit them to article websites that have a high ranking in Google, which gives you a very high chance of getting on the first page of Google and Yahoo (even #1!), provided you follow certain rules.

Forum marketing
Also for zero cost, you can advertise through forums, as long as you follow the rules. You need to post quality responses to forums, without directly promoting your link. Adding a signature to your profile is usually permissible. You should build trust within the forum first because the more trust forum members have of you, the more often they will visit your site.

4. Test your advertising strategies

Now that you have an advertising strangely and a set budget, you must test it.

1. If you created a landing page, how does it convert from that page, to your merchant page? (merchant click-thrus)

2. Split testing your ads, and landing, pages to see which one converts the best.
